The energy level the morning of the meet was incredible as news of Karen’s goal had reached the crowd. We all knew she was hoping for a historic lift, but it didn’t sink in just how historic until we heard Gus announce, ‘Karen Campbell is up next with an opening bench press attempt of 501.5. This will be a World Record for 198 Open Women and Masters Women 47-53’!
I was a side judge for Karen’s attempt and thus had a bird’s eye view. I watched as her coach Al Stork handed the weight off to her. The descent was slow and under control, the touch was spot on, and then the press command. The bar exploded off her chest and then slowed which brought a huge eruption of support from the crowd. Karen, feeding off the energy from the crowd struggled through the sticking point and earned 3 white lights. Sitting in the judges’ chair I can tell you that there was no doubt about this lift. I have been lifting and competing since 1982 and it was one of the most awe inspiring lifts I’ve had the honor to witness much less judge.
If you’ve ever had the honor of meeting Karen you know that she is quick to smile and very humble. She is always willing to help anyone who asks. This wonderful lady is coached by Al Stork who has coached his lifters to over 40 World Records. Both Al and Karen are incredible assets to the WABDL and we are proud that they choose to help make our Federation what it is. WABDL Nation Strong.
