Jim was a very fast runner and a competitive athlete throughout high school in baseball, football and track and field. At a lineman, he routinely out sprinted the fastest guys on the team and recorded a 4.37 second 40 and ran a 10/73 second 100 meters in track weighing in at 260 lbs.
Jim started training heavy and competed in his first meet at the age of 16 hitting a 405 bench press before the days of powerlifting gear.
At the age of 22 Jim became a competitive powerlifter as well as training and competing in Strongman, and Highland Games. Throughout the years, he competed in AAU, ADFPS, APA, APF NASA, SPF, USPA, USAPL, USPF and in 2001 competed in his first WABDL meet in the corner of Gold Gym in Rancho Cordova, CA. His best lists in WABDL were a 672.4 bench and a 606.3 deadlift.
Jim was one of the original members of Team Super Training which boasted three 800+ benchers, for 1,000+ squatters, and eight 700+ deadlifters. He has coached and trained multiple past and present World Record Holders, including Jody Woods, James Hunter, Hoss Cartright, and Roy Bradshaw. In the past Jim devoted his time to coaching in Special Olympics and brought three Special Olympians to compete in WADL.
Jim and Ken Anderson together worked in the development of the Super Katana Bench Shirt which helped revolutionize the bench press.
Jim’s best recorded lifts are a 937 squat, 672.4 deadlift, 2,402 total and holds the current UPA Masters World Bench Press record of 804.7 lbs.
